Father's Day Critics
Yes! After a long wait, I could finally watch Father's Day, the most recent film produced (in this case, co-produced) by the legendary studio Troma Films. Was the wait worth it? The answer is a very enthusiastic "What the hell?!". I don't think any plot synopsis can capture the scale and intensity of the film madness offered by Father's Day. This film combines multiple tones and styles, but for some reason, it doesn't feel fractured nor incongruent, but perfectly integrated into an indescribable whole, in which the dramatic scenes display genuine emotion (such as the devastating confrontation between a homosexual young man and his homophobic father), but they don't feel out of place when they are followed by moments of black or absurdist humor which avoids the film from getting too solemn. And well, let's not even talk about the absolutely grotesque gore and atrocities perpetrated by the villain, who is kept as an enigmatic figure of an uncertain provenance and motivation during the whole film, something which works very well in order to keep the suspense and the unpredictable nature from the screenplay. Father's Day can be classified as a "revenge movie", but that doesn't mean the story follows the typical arc from that kind of films. I can assure you that the last 20 minutes from Father's Day were a genuine surprise, doubly pleasant for their combination of visceral impact and artistic sensibility. And yes, I have just said "artistic sensibility". I can't deny that the special effects from Father's Day possess a low quality, specially comparing them to the ones of mainstream films. But what distinguishes this movie is an abundance of that ineffable "poetry" which becomes even the most extreme scenes into a stimulating experience to the mind as well as a provocative one to the senses. Some people have suggested the fact that this film is designed to be watched under the influence of alcohol, or stronger chemicals; however, my theory is that Father's Day itself is the drug, because its effects alter our perception of the real world, making us doubt about its placid routines and moral simplicity. However, I also have to say that such a potent visual drug will definitely not be for every taste. For practical effects, Father's Day belongs to the "neo grindhouse" movement, because it pretends to emulate the appearance of an old film which is being shown on TV (even including promotional ads: "Tune our next programme: Star Raiders!"). That's a common gimmick, but it works well to complement the experience, because it automatically sets it into a historical context which is more compatible with its "retro" images and its irreverence. So, I recommend this excellent film with a lot of enthusiasm, even knowing the fact that many people will consider it a piece of junk. Paraphrasing Plato, "art is in the eye of the beholder", and as consequence, what is important isn't the consensus, but the personal effect a movie provokes in each one of us.
